I am interested in the physical world that surrounds me and the objects and structures that it contains. In the exploration of this world I have found myself focusing in and out; out to the wider landscape, whether natural or manmade, rural or urban and in to the more intimate, private world of the home.
I am interested in landscape, architecture and physical structures as well as the ‘found or everyday still life’ that encompasses the haphazard arrangement of objects to be found in day-to-day settings. I have focused on objects or environments that are personal to me but I would hope that their everyday nature would resonate with the communal experience of the physical world. We all have a recognition of the familiar but so familiar does it become that we take it for granted. With this thought in mind, my working process begins with representation and works towards abstraction with a view to achieving clarity by bringing out essential elements. The use of abstraction may make the familiar seem less familiar and aid the perception of particular aspects of reality by isolating and heightening them.
My work takes physical form through working with and between representation and abstraction as well as having a strong concern with colour and light. These formal concerns are expressed predominantly through the media of photography, drawing and painting as well as sometimes through the use of printmaking and collage.
